New LightStar 300 from Terralux

March 29, 2011  |  All the rest, News and Information  |  1 Comment

Terralux is a Colorado-based manufacturer of high-powered LED lighting solutions.  Stromquist has been selling Terralux flashlights for years, and they have proven to be a fantastic tool in the HVAC field.  Technicians love them.

In February Terralux introduced the LightStar300, which is the result of years of electrical engineering and manufacturing experience as well as customer feedback. It features high/ low modes and a recessed tailcap switch to prevent accidental activation and for increased durability.  It is electronically regulated to ensure constant light output, and it has logic built in that makes the LED flicker at the end of battery life to alert the user to change the batteries. How cool is that?  Speaking of batteries, the light will run 3 hours on high mode and 24 hours on low mode and operates on 2 AA batteries.

The LightStar300 provides 300 lumens of light output in high mode, and 100 lumens in low mode. Tested against an incandescent flashlight,  the light output was shown to be 25 times that of a standard bulb.  The beam pattern is a wide spill, uniform light.

If you’re in the Atlanta area, stop by our counter and check them out for yourself.  You can’t help but be impressed by these flashlights.  If you aren’t in Atlanta, you can see them at http://www.terraluxcorp.com/terralux.

Product Review: The Honeywell T775 Controller

The Honeywell T775 Series stand alone controllers have now been on the market for several years. This diverse controller offers the technician a multitude of installation options on one small package.

This controller that stands 8 inches wide by 4 inches wide can be mounted anywhere within 1000 feet of its sensor location and be purchased as a standard enclosure or a NEMA 4X enclosure.

The T775 has an EEPROM that saves all values entered. The date and time values are retained for 24 hours after power loss. After power loss of more than 24 hours values may need to be reentered.

IMPORTANT:  If a high limit set point is entered into a T775 controller this value is IRREVERSIBLE !!

Features:

Voltage: 24/120/240 note: cannot be used for DC voltages

Set Point Range: -40 to 248 F

T775A and B models:  relay outputs from 1 SPDT to 4 SPDT (no analog outputs). Sensor inputs 1 to 2. Floating outputs 0-to 2

T775M models:  Modulating with analog outputs of 2-10Vdc or 0-10 Vdc or 4-20 mA or Electronic Series 90.  Relay outputs from 0 to 4 SPDT. 2 sensor inputs

Product Review: Ecobee a Web-Based Residential Stat

March 22, 2011  |  Product Reviews, Thermostats  |  1 Comment

Many commercial thermostats can now do so much remotely thanks to technology. My team is very familiar with web based thermostats for commercial applications. They have been around for years and have enabled our commercial customers numerous benefits including energy savings and remote monitoring and programming. The price of these web based thermostats put them out of reach for most home owners.

Finally, there is a great web-based residential thermostat for the home owner. Ecobee, Read More

Product Review: Belimo NEMA 4X Actuator

March 17, 2011  |  Product Reviews  |  No Comments

If you have chilled or hot water valves mounted outdoors and exposed to the elements, you know it’s always been a race against time to see if the elements destroy the actuators before the warranty runs out. Moisture and humidity, excessive dust build-up, severe cold, and UV radiation can shorten service life. Over the years we’ve seen all of the major control companies come out with enclosures that were expensive and usually an aftermarket installation, thus labor intensive. They would do the job, but they weren’t always the most practical or economical solution.

We were happy to find out that Belimo developed NEMA 4X actuators that are available for air dampers and characterized control valves. The unique NEMA 4X housing is factory assembled as part of the actuator, so it comes to you ready to be used in even the harshest conditions. The enclosure was designed to be weather-tight and corrosion resistant for conditions such as rooftop applications, indoor swimming pools, wood drying kilns, agriculture and food industries. The housing even provides enough internal space to install components such as a relay or controller — a feature we think is very smart.  For high humidity locations (like us in the deep south) or low temperature (-40°F) applications, a heater with controller can be supplied with the NEMA 4X actuator.  Now that is great thinking and planning on Belimo’s part!

We are very impressed with the design, build and features of this new product from Belimo, and we think it will stand the test of time and hold up well in field conditions.  The heat and humidity here in Florida will certainly provide a challenge, but we believe the Belimo NEMA 4X actuators will stand up to the challenge as a top quality product line  from a top manufacturer.

Easy Temperature and Humidity Logging

March 9, 2011  |  All the rest, Test Equipment  |  No Comments

Do you ever need to track temperatures or humidity levels in a certain space for an extended period of time?  Sometimes taking just one reading doesn’t give you a big enough picture; that’s when a data logger comes in handy.  UEi, a leading manufacturer of testing and monitoring equipment, has a great data logger on the market.  It’s small, inexpensive, easy to use, and doesn’t require the purchase of software to download the data.

It has a magnetic mount that makes it easy to “hide,” and it can log up to 32,000 data points (16,000 temperature and 16,000 humidity).  The temperature range is -40 to 158 degrees F, and the humidity range is 0 to 100% .  You can select your sampling intervals to be anywhere from 2 seconds up to 24 hours, and you can set values that will trigger the built-in LED alarm. It is Windows compatible with a USB interface, so when you are finished gathering your data, you simply plug it in to the USB port of your computer to download the information.  The included software allows you to chart your results, calculate dew points and export the data to other file formats. It operatates on a 3.6v lithium battery and has a one-year limited warranty.
